It has always been tradition that the father of the bride walks his daughter down the aisle. This dates back to arranged marriages to prevent the groom from backing out and the daughter was seen as property. Here recently, couples are starting to walk down the aisle together. One reason for this change, is that the bride may not have anyone to walk her down: however, there is a much deeper reason for this. Since social norms have been changing and living together prior to marriage is more acceptable, walking down the aisle together as a couple symbolizes the beginning of a new chapter in their life.
